Choosing a New Domain Name Part 2

It’s so important to check the domain name first because the great name you thought of will likely already be taken.

For example,  if I wanted to create a site called freewordpressthemes, I couldn’t do it because somebody else is using that name already.

There’s something else you need to do as well, and that is to use an ordinary search engine like Google or, my favourite,  Ixquick,  and type the name that you’re hoping to use into the search engine and see what comes up.

The reason for this is that you may find many sites which don’t have a  domain name as such but do use the words in their titles.

This particularly applies to people who have sites on wordpress.com, for example, which will give you a wordpress domain name but it might be like the one you want to use.

And this applies to Blogger and Flikr and other sites where people can come up with titles and user names that don’t have to be registered.

The only requirement is that they’re not being used by anyone else on that particular site.

It’s my experience that once you’ve done this you may feel a little bit depressed.

You’ll think that, depending on the niche that you’re interested in, that all the good names have already gone.

There’s one more point when you’re searching and that is to think of SEO – Search Engine Optimization.

It will be a real help to you if you can think of a domain name which will identify your niche so that when people search, it’s your site that comes on the first page.

As an example, typing “Bulgarian Stock photos”  into the new Bing Search Engine gives this result:

Bulgarian stockphotos search result on BingWhich means that for the key phrase bulgarian stockphotos my site is first out of 471,000

A search for these terms gives a similar result.

stock photos of bulgaria

stockphotos of bulgaria

bulgarian stockphotos

That’s not too bad.

Use Your Name as a Domain Name Part 3

I put up my pages on the web and I had to decide upon a domain name. I decided on a domain name of “johnrochaphoto” combining my name and occupation.

This has been a good domain name for me. It ranks pretty well in the search engines but there’s no doubt that if you just type John Rocha by itself into any search engine you’re not likely to find me at number 1.

John Rocha is not a common name but nevertheless worldwide there are several others: Denver Estate Agents, Irish fashion designers, Brazilian footballers, Boxers and if you take Rocha on its own even some photographers – April Rocha springs to mind.

I couldn’t have predicted this. Things change all the time.

Of course this can be confusing for the public. I recently answered an email from an irate lady who complained that I didn’t design shoes suitable for women over 40.

I reply to my correspondents in as friendly way as I can pointing out that I’m not in the fashion business, I don’t sell houses in Denver and in spite of my late father’s example, I’m not a boxer either.

So you can see that there are difficulties in establishing a domain name based on your personal name.

But I have found it worth doing. I really do want people to understand that I’m a photographer. I hope I have a personal style. And as the years go by I want people to know that I’m still active in Photography.

Age doesn’t matter. I’m in my sixties now but I’m still a stripling. I see that David Bailey is still going strong and I was gratified to read that Sam Haskins is still active as always. I’m not much of a fan if his in girl photographer mode but very much admire his work as a chronicler of African life.

The point I’m making is, that in spite of all the unforeseeable vicissitudes of life, it’s worth establishing your own name as part of your brand on the web.

But what if you decide not to use your name?

Some years ago I began to blog using Wordpress.

Like many bloggers I began by using the hosted service with Wordpress.com before moving onto the self hosted service.

Now I use Wordpress.org.

At first I used many of the themes which are widely available but I always hankered after my own exclusive themes.

Here on Freethemesplus I have these objectives: To:

provide 100% clean coded WordPress themes

have very few restrictions

advise on making completely original WordPress themes

comment on related matters such as Domain Names and Web Hosting

If you like the site, please let me know in your comments

All the best to WordPress bloggers everywhere
